About Bengali Culture
The people of Bengal are known as Bengali, and the language they speak is called Bengali or Bangla. As they follow the Hindu or Muslim culture, their festivals and marriage rituals differ to some extent. Some of the Hindu Bengalis festivals are Durga puja, kali puja, Saraswati puja, Deepavali and Ratha yatra; whereas some of the Muslim Bengalis festivals are: Chand Raat, eid ul-Fitr, eid ul-Adha and Shab-e-Barat.

In the Hindu Bengali culture, Durga puja (the worship of goddess Durga) is one of the most awaited and biggest festivals which is celebrated with great bliss. The festival, also called Sharad Utsav, comes once every year, and it starts on the sixth day and ends on the tenth day of the lunar fortnight. On the last day of the festival, the people bid goodbye to the idols of goddess Durga placed at homes or temples by immersing them in ponds, rivers, or seas.

In the Muslim Bengali culture, eid-ul-Fitr is the biggest festival that falls at the end of Ramzan or Ramadan – the month of fasting. The celebration of this festival starts with great enthusiasm by offering ‘namaz’ at mosques and then carrying on to offering feasts to the guests.

Some of the rituals of the Hindu Bengalis are: Patri-Patro, ai budo Bhat, the exchange of garlands and Bidaay. Patri-Patro is that bright day when the families of the bride-to-be and groom-to-be meet to come up with a suitable date for the Bengali shaadi. Ai Buddo Bhat is the feast enjoyed the night before the marriage of the bride. The family members and relatives of the bride join to wish her a happy life ahead. The groom and the bride exchange their garlands made from flowers. At Bidaay – the bride leaves her parent’s home – the bride’s family and relatives shower their love on the couple and bless them good and prosperous life ahead.

Some of the wedding rituals, which the Muslim Bengalis follow include the Henna or Mehandi ceremony, turmeric ceremony, and nikah. In the henna ceremony, the henna designers make beautiful designs on the bride’s hands and feet by applying henna paste through cones. The paste, once dried, is washed away, which leaves its colour for a few days. During the turmeric ceremony, women apply the raw turmeric paste on the bride’s skin, which makes the bride appear more beautiful. Nikah can be called the main wedding ritual during which the registrar asks for the couple’s consent for the marriage and makes them sign the marriage contract.

The Bengali life partner marriages glorify the Bengali culture. They go through valuable traditions and rituals and tie couples into a “loving” relationship.
